3 volumes, (10, portrait) 1459 (40), (12) 1268 (30), (40) 1292 (25) p. Contemporary blind-stamped Vellum with raised bands, Folio.
The collected works of French Huguenot theologian André Rivet, or Andreas Rivetus (1572-1651).
Rivet was appointed tutor to Frederik Hendrik’s son William in 1631, one of the leading ministers in The Hague, professor at Leiden University, and one of the most respected Calvinist scholars of the 17th century. He was a relentless apologist of the Reformed faith against the attacks of the Roman Catholic Church and wrote against the Socinians’ theology. Rivet was also a central figure in the Synod of Dort (1618-1619). These folio volumes represent his mature thought, systematically organized and expanded by the author himself.
Complete sets of all three volumes are scarce.
Content:
Tomus Primus: Exegeticus — 191 Exercises on Genesis; Commentary on Exodus; expanded lectures on the Decalogue; extensive indices of questions, Scripture references, and subjects.
Tomus Alter: Exegeticorum et Didacticorum — further biblical commentaries and theological treatises.
Tomus Tertius: Opera Polemica — major polemical works defending Reformed orthodoxy against Roman Catholic, Arminian, and Socinian positions.
Waterstains in the first part of volume one, and some pages of volume two are browned. A fine set.
