J.J. Scheuchzer, 1672-1733, was een Zwitserse geleerde, bekend door zijn in 1727 in het Duits en het Latijn uitgegeven werk: ‘Physica Sacra’ of ‘Heilige Natuurkunde’, in hetwelk hij al het natuurkundige, in de Bijbel voorkomende, probeerde te verklaren en uit te leggen op een Bijbelse wijze. In Nederland kwam dit werk voor het eerst in 1735 uit. 760 grote prenten op 758 platen waarvan 5 dubbel-pagina. Met onderschriften bij elke prent in het Latijn en Duits. (Perkament van de ruggen wat vervuild, gedeelte van de rug van deel 7/8 beschadigd, het portret van de graveur ontbreekt, boekblok en prenten in zeer goede staat, helder en fris).

With engraved frontispiece, 15 engraved title-vignettes, engraved portrait of the author (mezzotint) & 760 engravings on 758 plates, including 5 double-folio, after J.M. Fueslin, numbered 1-750. (Vellum a bit soiled in places, small damage to 1 spine, engraved portrait of the engraver lacks, a clean set). The 760 engravings depict a multitude of subjects, including natural science, astronomy, botany, zoology, paleontology, and biblical scenes. The biblical scenes are captioned in Latin and German, both with a reference to the accompanying Bible text. All engraved in copper by several artists under the supervision of Jean-André Pfeffel after the designs by Jean Melchior Fueslin.

A fine set of this extensive and educational series is highly esteemed for its multitude of beautifully engraved plates. Von Fauber zu Faur, 1855: “In Scheuchzer’s gigantic work, ‘Physica Sacra’, the Baroque attains, philosophically as well as artistically, its high point and its conclusion. It is the last of those elegant works which do not contain illustrations to a text but which are, in effect, composed of splendid plates with a text to accompany them (…) Scheuchzer hit upon the idea of investigating and supporting with modern methods all places in which the Bible poses problems of natural science.” The work encompasses all aspects of nature and natural history, including zoology, ichthyology, botany, astronomy, and more, tracing the Biblical Narrative from Genesis to Apocalypse.
