Afgebeeld is het moment waarop de apostel Paulus de geest van waarzeggerij uitdrijft bij een slavin in Filippi, een sleutelgebeurtenis tijdens zijn tweede zendingsreis in Macedonië.
Deze behoort tot de meest markante en theologisch geladen episodes uit het leven van Paulus, waarin christelijke autoriteit wordt geplaatst tegenover en boven heidense waarzeggerij.
De compositie vertoont nauwe verwantschap met de voorstelling die is opgenomen in de geïllustreerde Oude en Nieuwe Testamenten van Jan en Casper Luyken (uitgave 1712), zij het dat de scène daar in spiegelbeeld is weergegeven. De tekening kan worden beschouwd als een zelfstandige voorbereidende of parallelle uitwerking van dit onderwerp. Rechtsonder met de hand geschreven: Hand. X. 16.17.

The composition represents the moment when the Apostle Paul expels the spirit of divination from a slave girl in Philippi, a pivotal episode during his second missionary journey in Macedonia.
The subject is among the most striking and theologically charged moments in Paul’s life, confronting Christian authority with pagan divination. The drawing is closely related to the illustration of the same episode published in the 1712 edition of the illustrated Old and New Testaments by Jan and Casper Luyken, although in that version the scene is reversed, with the woman approaching the apostle from the foreground.
