(Text pages occasionally slightly browned, exteriors rubbed at some places and the spines somewhat discoloured. The engravings of volume 1 until 6 are shorter than the text pages, engraving 66 of volume one has hand-coloured parts. All volumes bear the ex-libris bookplate of Rev. William Howley Archbishop of Canterbury 1766-1848 with a coat of arms and his pen-name ‘W. Cantuar’. The first French edition of this extensive natural history of the Bible by the Swiss scholar Johann Jacob Scheuchzer, 1672-1733. Illustrated with a frontispiece by H. Sperling after Preissler, a portrait of the author (engraved in mezzotint) by T. Laub after I.H. Heidegger, two portraits of the engraver by J.G. Pintz after G. de Marees, several head-pieces and 760 extraordinary engravings. The 760 engravings depict a multitude of subjects among which natural science, astronomy, botanics, zoology, palaeontology and biblical scenes. The biblical scenes are captioned in Latin and German, both with a reference to the accompanying Bible text. All engraved in copper by several artists under the supervision of Jean-André Pfeffel after the designs by Jean Melchior Fueslin. A fine and complete set of this extensive and educational series being highly esteemed for its multitude of beautifully engraved plates.)
