Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719) wrote the book “De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen”, which contains biographies of artists of the seventeenth century. The book is an extremely important source of knowledge. It consists of three volumes and is a sequel to Carel van Mander’s Schilderboeck from 1604.
