A rare Dutch edition of Bugenhagen’s Latin Psalter with Bucer’s German translation and commentary, richly illustrated and furnished with glosses, summaries, and concordances. Contains the complete Book of Psalms, each with Latin exposition, German translation, and practical devotional use. Includes summaries, prayers, and a “Heilige Schrift Concordantien”, a singularly detailed scripture reference apparatus. Fine, gold-tooled spine. Loss of three letters on the title shield, blank pages at the end of the summary, and at the end of the book are missing. A superb copy in an 18th-century binding, mottled calf with a fine decorated spine and marbled endpapers. Johannes Bugenhagen (1485–1558), known as “Doctor Pomeranus,” was Martin Luther’s pastor in Wittenberg and organizer of the Reformation in northern Germany and Scandinavia. His Interpretatio Psalmorum (Latin, 1524) became a foundational psalm commentary praised by Luther himself. Martin Bucer (1491–1551), a prominent reformer of Strasbourg, made the German translation from Hebrew influenced by Bugenhagen’s Latin original.

This edition was printed in the Netherlands (Geneva imprint but Deventer/Van Gendt press) around 1580 and is distinguished by a woodcut title, red-and-black typesetting, and refined typographic decoration. Bookplate of Dr. S. Lenselink.
